Physiology and Environmental Response

An understanding of the "workings" (physiology) of the cocoa plant and its response to factors such as light, temperature and water availability is valuable in maximising crop productivity by selecting planting material with appropriate characteristics, and adapting planting density and shade to suit local conditions. Research at both the whole plant and molecular level undertaken in controlled environment facilities combined with field studies is contributing to the understanding of the genetic and epigenetic factors involved.
